Volksgrenadier divisions were formed in the German army from late 1944 to bolster defences after losses against the Soviet forces. Organized around cadres of experienced soldiers, they were bolstered with troops from the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe as well as teenagers, older men and injured troops returning to duty.
Issued with more submachineguns, light machine guns, assault rifles and single shot panzerfausts than other units they brought more short range firepower than standard German army teams.
